How Social Media Changed Our Perception of Beauty

Technology is rapidly changing and it's also changing the way we think and perceive things. Social media, for example, has introduced new notions regarding beauty and widened our perspectives on physical attractiveness.

For years, television and print media have given us unrealistic images of ideal beauty. The ideal body type, face shape, hair, skin, eyes, and even lip shape have been portrayed unrealistically by mass media.

These new standards have either intentionally or unintentionally forced us to conform. We often compare ourselves to what we see on television, print media and even strive to achieve a certain look.

During the past few decades, advertising has consistently been one of the main contributing factors to insecurity among men and women. That's because advertisers tend to highlight out insecurities and manipulate us into using a certain brand or product.

But with the introduction of the internet and social media, people are becoming more aware and the attitude towards health has changed over time. We now see a lot of campaigns on body positivity and social media influencers that use social media sites as a platform for self-expression.

Supermodel and body image activist, Ashley Graham is probably one of the well-known advocates of body positivity. Being the first size-16 model ever to land the cover of Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue, Ashley Graham has brought size acceptance and fat or BBW girls appreciation into the spotlight.

Many companies and organizations have launched large-scale campaigns to promote body positivity. Some countries have also made certain policies to promote body image and have begun enforcing strict regulations in advertising.

These recent developments are obviously changing the way we perceive beauty in a positive way. But there is still plenty of work to be done and it's really up to us to change things and raise awareness towards healthy body image and positive self-esteem.
